International PR consultancy Burson-Marsteller has published some interesting ‘Twiplomacy’ research on the world’s most connected leaders on Twitter. The governments of more than three-quarters of the 193 UN member countries have a presence on Twitter.
More interestingly almost half of the 505 accounts analysed are personal accounts belonging to heads of state, heads of government and ministers of foreign affairs, with a third tweeting for themselves – but most on a very irregular or infrequent basis.
Swedish Foreign Minister @CarlBildt is the best connected world leader, mutually following 44 other world leaders. US President @BarackObama by contrast only has mutual Twitter relations with four other world leaders. More than 34.5 million people follow @BarackObama, but he only follows a ‘select’ 660,000 back – including me @stuartbruce!
